Family time in Connecticut

By: Jessica Robinson

You’re probably thinking, what can we do this weekend with the kids?  Well- it’s Labor Day weekend!  Kids are off on Monday and we’re ready for a long weekend.

Pick your own apples, peaches and pears on this holiday weekend!  The summer is nearly over and we’re skipping right into fall.  As the weather starts to cool off and the leaves will start to float through the autumn air, we’ll start to bake again.  Stock up with apples and such from your local orchard this weekend.  If you don’t want to do “pick your own” most of the farm have already done the work for you.  I LOVE homemade apple pie, rustic apple tartlets and making apple sauce from scratch.  Most farms post a chart in their store of the varieties they have available, their characteristics and what use they are best for.

So many of these farms and orchards have great activities scheduled on the weekends during the fall.  It’s not just about picking up the most perfect apple- the kids will have a great time on their play areas, corn mazes, petting zoos and more!  Be sure and check out their websites before you head out to see what’s going on this weekend at their farm!  Visit the Connecticut Apple Grower’s website to find an orchard close to you.
